Voice Recognition Software

Voice Recognition is the conversion of spoken words into computer text. Voice Recognition is used in offices and also home use. It is also used as a form of security.

Voice Recognition software was introduced several years ago. It has been helpful for people who have lost full use of your hands due to spinal cord injury, orthopaedic trauma, carpal tunnel, muscle weakness, or some other reason. The other problem is that a computer needs to be trained for the Voice Recognition software.

Correcting errors is another issue. When you notice an error in the transcription of the word you say and what appears on the screen and begin the error correction process, a list of alternatives will pop up. You might say, "Choose seven" to select the seventh alternative and you would be on your way to continue dictating. If the correct word was not on the list, however, then you must begin spelling the word until the software "guesses" the correct word. The newest programs allow you to spell using the natural alphabet (versus the military alphabet "alpha" "bravo" "charlie" used by older discrete speech versions).

For Voice Recognition software a computer should have a relatively good speed. The interesting part is that if someone uses Morse code that person can achieve a speed upto 40wpm even on a slow computer and in a computer with a normal speed a person can achieve a speed of an average of 50wpm. Voice Recognition might also be harmful for your health. If we use speech recognition products improperly, you can damage your vocal cords, resulting in chronic hoarseness, fatigue when speaking, and even a temporary loss of your voice. This happens because of repeated repetition of words which strains the vocal cord.

Voice Recognition is also used as security at gates and offices. The only problem with this is that if something goes wrong with the software then people won’t be able to get in and if this is not noticed then there will be a lot of confusion.

Voice Recognition software’s in classrooms won’t work out because it won’t be the perfect atmosphere to be speaking as there will be a lot of noise. It is also time consuming as when there are mistakes it will take quite some time to correct them. Students will also need quite a bit of experience to work with Voice Recognition software as it needs a lot of practice.

Voice Recognition software is basically for those who have disabilities such as spinal cord injury, orthopaedic trauma, carpal tunnel, muscle weakness, or some other reason. It won’t be that useful as if a person has a small computer speed his speaking speed will be on an average of around 40 wpm. If someone has a speed like this then it will be better to use the keyboard for typing. Also we have to teach the computer the different commands and that will take up quite some time.
